The mission of the Fire Fighters’ Association of Ontario is one of partnership and
collaboration that provides resources, and education inclusive to
all Volunteer/Paid on Call firefighters within the province of Ontario.
Hey Volunteer & Career Fire Service Members,
We are excited to invite firefighters, fire officers, emergency responders, and other interested personnel from across Eastern Ontario and throughout the province to join us for an upcoming Virtual Electric Vehicle & Lithium-Ion Battery Firefighter Training Program.
As electric vehicles, energy storage systems, e-bikes, e-scooters, power tools, and other lithium-ion battery technologies become increasingly common, understanding thermal runaway, fire behaviour, suppression considerations, reignition hazards, air monitoring, incident command, and post-fire management is becoming an important part of modern emergency response.

This virtual two and half-hour program will combine classroom instruction, case studies, fireground discussion and practical demonstrations, including:
● EV and lithium-ion battery construction, hazards and thermal runaway
● Fire, explosion, toxic gas and re-ignition considerations
● Fireground size-up, hazard zones, PPE and scene isolation
● Current EV fire suppression and water-application strategies
● HAZMAT considerations, air monitoring and post-fire operations
● Incident Command considerations and tactical decision-making
● Apparatus positioning, hose-line deployment and exposure protection
● Real-world EV and lithium-ion case studies and lessons learned
● Discussion of tactics firefighters can apply within their own departments
We will also provide webinar participants with Incident Command worksheets, EV response information and additional lithium-ion battery response resources that departments can take back and use for future training and operational planning. The goal is to ensure attendees leave with not only theory and practical knowledge, but also useful tools they can continue using after the course.
